AUniversalTerminatorcharacterisalsoavailableforyouruse,theASCII NULLcharacter(00h-0).AllADI/MDIandMDSunitsrespondtothis characterastheydototheirrespectiveprogrammedSerialTerminator character.Therefore,ifyouforget,orcannotidentifyaparticularunit’s programmedTerminator,youcanusethischaracterintheinterim. ManyASCIIterminalsandTerminalEmulationprogramscannottransmit thischaracter.However,youcanissuethischaracterfromtheRLCTerminal Emulatorbypressing<CTRL-END>. SerialportEmbeddedDataitemscanutilizetheADI/MDI’sSerial Terminator,ortheycanspecifytheirownTerminatorcharacter,independent oftheunit’sTerminator.Whiletheunitiscollectingadataitemfromthe serialport,itacceptstheTerminatorspecifiedbythatitem.AnEmbedded Dataitem’sTerminatorcanrangefrom01h(1)toFFh(255),excludingthe BACKSPACEandESCAPEcharacters. SerialTransmitDelay AllRedLionControlsproductscontainingserialportsutilizeReceive buffers.WhenaparticularRLCunitreceivesitsTerminatorcharacter, usuallyan‘ ‘,itmustinterruptthecurrenttaskitisprocessing,inorderto processthecontentsoftheReceivebuffer. Thisinterruptiontakessomefiniteamountoftime,ontheorderof10’sor even100’sofmilliseconds.Theunitcannotreceiveanyadditionalcharacters whileitisprocessingthebuffer,and,oncefinished,mustreturntothe interruptedtaskathand.Therefore,amethodforestablishingaminimum timebetweenconsecutivetransmissionsisnecessary. TheSerialTransmitDelaysettingcontrolstheminimumdelaytime betweentheendofonetransmissionstringandthebeginningofthenext stringfromtheunit.TheTransmitDelayvaluecanrangefrom0seconds(NO delay)to2.5seconds.TheADI/MDIautomaticallyrunsaTransmitDelayat theendofeverytransmissionstring.ItalsorunsTransmitDelaysafter <CR><LF>pairsinallofitsCommandresponsetransmissions. Inaddition,provisionshavebeenmadeforyoutoinsertTransmitDelays anywhereinatransmissionstringthatyoudeemnecessaryoressential.In ordertoforcetheunittorunaTransmitDelayataparticularlocationina transmissionstring,youinsertthe‘ t’character(ALT-T)atthedesired locationinthestring.Whentheunitencountersthe‘ t’characterwhile processingitsTransmitbuffer,itrunsaTransmitDelayinsteadof transmittingthecharacter.OncetheTransmitDelayhasexpired,theunit continuesontothenextcharacterinthebuffer. -70-
