Content | By David Sear and Gillian Kersley Being of service to Saudi Aramco, and its vendors An interview with Saad Al-Shiha Saad Al-Shiha works for Saudi Aramco – one of the largest oil & gas companies in the world, To give an idea of size, the company, in fact, pumps almost ten million barrels of oil a day and has reserves of over 160 billion barrels. Within its organisation he works in the Consulting Services Department in Dhahran in Saudi Arabia. This division forms the engineering core of the company. Between his busy daily schedule, he took time out to tell us something about his tasks and what he enjoys so much about them. www.valve-world.net58 May 2011 T he department in which Mr Al-Shiha works is responsible for setting up, writing, and maintaining the company’s engineering standards, specifications, and procedures. There, they also research new technologies in the oil & gas sector – both upstream and downstream – and provide engineering support to plant operations. “Saudi Arabia is the 15th largest country in the world with a total area of approximately 830.000 square meter,” says Mr Al-Shiha, “and Saudi Aramco has many plants there. Our staff are therefore continually involved in helping to solve problems in the field or related to projects. We also carry out technical audits, especially for valve manufacturers, but also for other commodity manufacturers as well. This is where my specialty knowledge comes into play as auditing vendor capabilities are one of the major building blocks in any relationship with Saudi Aramco.” A day in the life…. So what does an average working day for Mr Al-Shiha look like. It appears that much of his time is taken up with checking and answering the many e-mails that come in 24/7 from all around the world. These can cover such topics as approvals to vendors or technical issues, for example but also internal matters from operations and maintenance staff, as well as e-mails on specific projects – wherever they are in the world. Then there are queries to be answered about specifications and standards, proposals to be considered about using alternative materials and equipment in projects or in a multitude of services and applications. It is an ongoing process that may also be punctuated with failures in processes and incidents. All these types of tasks keep him at his desk for roughly 80% of his time.
