Activities —Securityofcitizens:deliveringtechnologysolutionsforcivilprotection,includingbio-securityandprotection againstrisksarisingfromcrimeandterroristattacks. —Securityofinfrastructuresandutilities:analysingandsecuringexistingandfuturepublicandprivatecritical/ networkedinfrastructure(e.g.intransport,energy,ICT),systemsandservices(includingfinancialandadminis- trativeservices). —Intelligentsurveillanceandbordersecurity:focusingontechnologiesandcapabilitiestoenhancetheeffective- nessandefficiencyofallsystems,equipment,toolsandprocessesaswellasmethodsforrapididentification requiredforimprovingthesecurityofEurope slandandcoastalborders,includingbordercontrolandsurveil- lanceissues. —Restoringsecurityandsafetyincaseofcrisis:focusingontechnologiesprovidinganoverviewof,andsupport fordiverseemergencymanagementoperations(suchascivilprotection,humanitarianandrescuetasks),and onissuessuchasinter-organisationalpreparation,coordinationandcommunication,distributedarchitectures andhumanfactors. Theabovefourareaswillbesupportedbythefollowingthemesofamorecross-cuttingnature: —Securitysystemsintegration,interconnectivityandinteroperability:Intelligence,informationgatheringand civilsecurity,focusingontechnologiestoenhancetheinteroperabilityofsystems,equipment,servicesand processes,includinglawenforcement,firefighting,civildefenceandmedicalinformationinfrastructures,as wellasonthereliability,organisationalaspects,protectionofconfidentialityandintegrityofinformationand traceabilityofalltransactionsandprocessing. —Securityandsociety:missionorientatedresearchwhichwillfocusonsocio-economicanalyses,scenario buildingandactivitiesrelatedto:cultural,social,politicalandeconomicdimensionsofsecurity,communica- tionwithsociety,theroleofhumanvaluesandpolicymaking,psychologysocialenvironmentofterrorism, citizens perceptionofsecurity,ethics,protectionofprivacy,societalforesightandsystemicriskanalysis. Researchwillalsoaddresstechnologiesthatbettersafeguardprivacyandliberties,andwilladdressvulnerabil- itiesandnewthreats,aswellasthemanagementandimpactassessmentofpossibleconsequences. —Securityresearchcoordinationandstructuring:coordinationofEuropeanandinternationalsecurityresearch effortsanddevelopmentofsynergiesbetweencivil,securityanddefenceresearch,improvementoflegal conditions,andencouragementtotheoptimaluseofexistinginfrastructures.
