The Conference was co-chaired by Dr. Paul Rosen, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Dr. David Whelan Boeing Company. Despite the tough economic times and the swine flu scares, the conference was very well attended. Over 500 paid attendees came from 20 countries, to receive over 200 papers and posters. The Tutorial program was a success with 285 registrants attending 17 Tutorials. All objectives of the conference were achieved, with numbers significantly higher than the anticipated attendance. The keynote address was prepared by Dr Michael Freilich, Director for Earth Sciences at NASA and covered the Earth Science Decadal Survey missions for NASA. This keynote amplified the conference theme: Radar: From Science to Systems. Dr Charles Elachi, Fellow IEEE and Director of NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory very enthusiastically presented the keynote address, on behalf of Dr Freilich. Several key IEEE Awards were presented at the Banquet. ∞ The IEEE Dennis J Pickard Medal for Radar Technologies and Applications was presented to Dr Philip M Woodward, Royal Radar Establishment UK (retired). Dr. Woodward is credited with developing the Radar ambiguity function, used by all Radar and Communications engineers. ∞ The IEEE/AESS Fred Nathanson Memorial Award, for the 2009 Young Radar Engineer of the Year, was presented to Dr Ravi Adve, University of Toronto. ∞ The IEEE/AESS Warren D. White Award for Excellence in Radar Engineering was presented to Dr Michael C Wicks, Air Force Research Laboratory. Dr Wicks was recognized for early development of knowledge aided adaptive processing. ∞ The 2005 Barry Carlton Award was presented for the best IEEE Transactions AES of that year. The paper was “Adaptive Imaging for Forward Looking Ground Penetrating Radar”, and was accepted by Prof Jian Li, University of Florida on behalf of her co-authors. The Radar Systems Panel met during the Radar Conference. Dr Michael Wicks took over as Chair of the panel from Prof. Hugh Griffiths University College London.
