Content	In designing the lighting system for the new 1.6-million- square-foot Concourse E and Atrium at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, Ramón Noya had several critical objectives. “First, I wanted a soft, diffused illumination that would offer excellent color consistency. An airport is a ‘people place,’so the lighting needed to create a color quality that would enhance the rendering of people’s faces. At the same time, I wanted lighting that could high- light the facility’s distinctive granite walls and terrazzo floors. Finally, the system had to be easily maintainable.” More than 1,000 GE T8 fluorescent lamps and a smaller number of metal halide lamps supplied the overall solution Noya was seeking. “In essence, the entire illumination scheme was accomplished with just two light sources — energy-efficient GE 32-watt 4-foot T8 fluorescent lamps and 100-watt metal halide lamps.” The 1,000-plus GE T8 lamps, combined with three-lamp electronic ballasts, provide significant cost and energy savings. In addition, GE T8 lamps have a 20,000-hour life, combined with excellent lumen maintenance.The open-fixture rated metal halide lamps primarily serve as downlights throughout Concourse E. “The elegant simplicity of a single fluorescent lamp-type and one metal halide source was the driving force behind this eye-pleasing project,”Noya concluded.
